Neck pain is a very common occurrence that is observed in people of most age groups. A large
number of people find relief within a year of the onset of pain. However, there have also been quite
a few instances in which neck pain extends over a considerable period of time and becomes
chronic.
Causes of Neck Pain
The muscles in our body function normally when they are held in the right position.
Unfortunately, often the grueling lifestyle of people in addition to their habits does not allow
their muscles to remain in their normal position. Furthermore, the body muscles are not designed to
bear constant excessive stretching and tightening. When the muscles are put under these conditions,
they end up inducing additional stress on various parts of the body. These include joints in the neck
and shoulder regions. Sustained over a long period of time, the joints in these regions could get
inflamed and the disc may get bulged.
Diagnosis of Neck Pain
Techniques such as X-ray and MRIs are helpful in showing the effects on muscles and joints,
but on their own, they cannot identify the underlying reasons for such a condition. Neither do they
help in establishing the strength or flexibility of the muscles. Therefore, a thorough physical
examination aided by the imaging tests is necessary to identify the muscle imbalances and any other
postural dysfunctions. These imbalances can be corrected with the help of appropriate stretches and
exercises, which are very often tailored to the patient’s condition.
Treatments for Neck Pain
Use of medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs is advised to seek
temporary relief from the pain but these do not treat the underlying problem. Another form of
physical treatment includes the use of far-infrared heat. Its use improves the flow of blood in the
area of application and hence provides a quick and lasting relief to the pain. It is usually
recommended not to involve in rigorous workouts till the imbalances are identified by a professional.
Similarly, any other sporting or physical activities such as yoga, Pilates, running, or swimming are
to be avoided as this may increase the imbalance and may lead to aggravating the pain.
It should be noted that not all healthcare professionals are capable of identifying and
treating such imbalances. It is necessary to consult someone who specializes in this field. Neck
pains usually respond positively to techniques such as cervical spinal decompression and Inversion
Therapy. Drinking plenty of water and practicing healthy eating habits are also advised to control
the oxidative stress and systemic inflammation.
