Middle Back Pain

Middle Back Pain, commonly known as mid back pain, is not a very common condition. Most people tend to experience lower back pain. It is, however, a very painful one, as it restricts a patient's movements and activities. The area from the base of the shoulder to the base of the rib cage is the mid back area, and the pain usually tends to be localized in this area.

Sometimes the ribs or the diaphragm also gets involved due to which the patient might experience shortness of breath and pain when breathing. In some cases, patients are also known to experience fatigue.

Causes and Symptoms of Mid Back Pain

This condition can be caused by traumas or imbalances, with spinal imbalances being the main reason in most cases. Furthermore, these imbalances could arise due to trauma caused to the mid back from bending, lifting heavy objects, or while performing other daily errands.

If the tension persists, the pain can spread to the diaphragm or the ribs. Daily activities that place a lot of stress on the joints and the muscles, can also pull the spine out of alignment resulting in spinal imbalances.

The pain does not occur over night; rather, it is a slow process of decline of the mid back’s function and strength.

Diagnosis of Mid Back Pain

It is very important that the source of this problem be identified accurately. As with most other forms of back pain, doctors require a knowledge of the person's medical history in addition to examining their physical condition in order to suggest appropriate treatment options. In certain cases, x-rays and blood tests are also required to diagnose the condition accurately.

Treatments for Mid Back Pain

A number of treatments for mid back pain focus on the muscles or the joints around the affected area. Chiropractors usually work on adjusting the affected area, whereas physiotherapists prescribe treatments that work on the muscles on both sides of the spine.

For those who need short-term relief and relaxation of the muscles around the mid back, there are several medications available that can help. However, the treatments that work best for this condition are the ones that treat the spinal imbalances. Once the spinal imbalance is diagnosed, corrective measures can be pursued for permanent relief.
